2 S8 W0 r3 ^9 n, V4 z* S! . }" ^4 _2 f3 r* t2 i& H
.....
Q6 [# I% G" F) n' T* C

3 J; v( F+ M/ o+ i% Z1 D8 z4 c/ F& ~

& Q' o: o/ X/ `!

$ y/ n3 L3 b4 T  L* p$ g6 V: s8 n: `9 ~" I. j6 H; S
: ]7 Z% s, l2 O  s
! L4 A" ~2 S, N: m: p
" Y8 R1 a; {7 t6 j$ H9 d( ?- n+ }2 a" q# U
虎子一朋友河南人,那年带孩子回国探亲,在北京玩几天。有一次等公共汽车时,孩子看那站牌,好半天发现认识一个字特兴奋:爸爸,爸爸这字我认识,是那什么。他爸见到这么些年辛辛苦苦的中文教育终於出了成果也特兴奋:对,真棒!好儿子什么的紧着鼓励。说了两句发现旁边等车的人群眼神不对,其中有一位小声嘀咕:“哪儿来的外地老冒,弱智”。自己一想可不吗,穿着十来年前的款式,十岁出头的孩子站牌上的字看了半天只认识一个,搁在国内不是弱智是什么?8 W, o7 }- r: N) k0 r: {

What effect will learning another language have on my child’s English language skills?

Many parents worry that their children’s English language skills will be affected by learning another language. The truth is that a child’s English will not be harmed by learning another language and may even be improved!
$ j& L4 Z& b; V* @
) ?, N2 e) G6 T2 o. dIn studies that looked at the effect of learning another language on the English language skills, the results have been positive. Students in second language programs readily transfer the skills they learn in one language to the other. All Alberta students take the same English language arts program and are expected to achieve the same standards. In early immersion programs, because of the initial focus on learning the second language, students do lag behind peers in the regular program in some English skills. However, they quickly catch up once they have had one or two years of English language arts. By Grade 5 or Grade 6, children in immersion programs do as well as or better than those in the English language program.  B5 d/ F7 |; b& D& Q+ Z

Many studies have found that English skills are actually enhanced by learning another language. Immersion and bilingual program students often outperform students in the regular program in some English skill areas.

The Rationale for Learning the Chinese Language (Mandarin) in the Province of Alberta
4 v4 j8 ^2 M! A" k: a. j
! V7 ~$ h* l3 Z5 {The value for Canadian society as a whole of learning the Chinese language is significant and can be summarized as follows:
" ~( t3 ?+ q! T' g2 i* G        •         increased awareness of and sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity ! L/ q  f9 Z; p9 {" V

Apart from the common advantages related to the learning of an international language, the learning of Chinese permits an insight into the rich and varied cultures developed in the Chinese-speaking world and bestows more opportunity to communicate directly with its people.  The learning of Chinese, as any other language, develops awareness of and sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity.  In addition to preserving cultural identity, it is also a means of cultural enrichment and is the best means of fostering understanding and respect among peoples and countries.
* _1 S7 K0 X; q6 X' [' R+ q4 [: U4 a' s* F; a0 v
Furthermore, it gives the opportunity to identify, question and challenge one’s own cultural assumptions, values and perspectives and contribute positively to society. These are benefits that can be gained by all students of Chinese, regardless of their backgrounds or heritage. 9 W* ]/ u( S+ U5 }- N! I

For those students who already have some knowledge of the Chinese language or a family connection to the culture, learning Chinese offers an opportunity to renew contact with their language and culture.  For some, it may contribute to maintaining and developing literacy. # Y) W) t: }2 e0 U" N# N4 @+ \

There is significant evidence to suggest that learning another language contributes to the development of first language skills and enhances cognitive functioning. ! `5 A) y1 f" S# L% l
