Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ' Y2 A0 F$ J! a/ Q

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
6 y9 |3 D4 O" f- p3 _Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 0 j; \* T3 Z6 z. m0 G7 P
news to report from that meeting.: A0 c' L" ?. v g) I+ D
& K9 P) v5 f7 b/ H* _; u" `First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
/ F1 Q' q* N. I' V0 D. Z! yundergraduate international students from the increase to the 7 X) n7 u# t* n3 _, g- V/ ^
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international & E( y' l2 P1 Y/ m) s% l$ A% D
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 6 _- v5 p: k/ S8 }0 ?8 r+ E
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). + O8 @9 x! t5 h+ V% q6 A
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase % ]& d/ t0 D. E
the differential for international graduate students.
! B- b$ c$ \4 M u Q/ m( a% w0 t, d$ o1 [$ M/ t& d
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 3 B; @/ R$ ?7 V$ \5 A' q! r
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 3 F& h. w& _1 p! {5 v" Y+ \
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students , B' m2 L* Y& \5 w8 O, ?" L# x3 t R
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ; ^, G* `( |2 U$ A, ?& [
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ! x; k4 O6 H( F- t! Z- U; P
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
& U5 M' H# R t; Eincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
6 p3 o( D0 Q- ~, k$ ginternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I ; ~7 ^. W3 ]5 g$ z
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that * U' j: G/ X5 M H
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
' H1 U0 H! u6 v8 @0 R0 A* `increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
