Supervises
The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.

The project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:
• Marketing and outreach to industry and workers

. L6 b' i: A  v% E• Centre-based delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”
• Interpretation and translation services
• Supportive counselling services

5 e3 m2 K! j) {- LThe Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement
( v& Q* Q9 D0 Q5 Tguidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign
0 a4 \) r( L0 e) p9 }, W/ PWorkers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
, ~# ~- j5 C: Isupportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.

2 J% X' F  L- S2 a+ JThe Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and
orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.
: V  Q% C& ?) S  v, eWorkshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and
8 ]8 ~) X& D1 R" x# pcommunity based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is
# P  v6 u; K7 Z; yrequired. The ability to work flexible hours is essential.

This position involves working as part of a team to provide services, create an
/ X2 O5 n; z3 I( tunderstanding of temporary foreign worker settlement issues, being innovative and
implementing solutions for TFW facing a variety of challenges. It also involves
$ X& \7 @% R8 v8 B5 @' g; Xmaintaining all information and records required by the program guidelines.

Responsibilities
7 h, }' _$ t' X" b' J% |$ u  C( z• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals
$ n) ~5 U) d( z9 I* ]5 Q' s• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN
  l7 Q- Z0 V  K; G" S) ^• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office
1 v) B6 _' C6 w  ~6 ]* A3 Y  t• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required
7 O& F7 T: f% b8 v• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment
" W+ D3 ?+ W2 V  Q• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services
8 x1 d* C. F7 h. f• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency
0 D3 W7 m& u  @  g) R• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW
/ S: N4 t/ _) n; y% z9 Q3 g• Promote English language services for TFW and employers
& Q2 d9 w9 ^- N• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required
• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers
• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
: C, X5 ^) u% P) ?! e6 u• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context
) U7 C2 |& y6 Z2 g" q• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area
+ z. T6 ~( I( F  E5 ?• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making
• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages
• Spanish language proficiency is an asset
