& A& q8 L+ V. {3 J1 ~, t1 o Bruce Thompson has had more than 25 years of experience in the environmental assessment, regulatory and planning field, holding positions in both federal and provincial levels of government, and more recently in the environmental consulting sector. He has operated his own private consulting practice since 1998. With Environment Canada, Dr. Thompson directed reviews of Environmental Assessments under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) in the Alberta region, and provided advice on impacts and mitigation. He also served as head of Compliance and Enforcement for this area, investigating violations of the Fisheries Act and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), verifying compliance in regulated industries, and promoting other means of achieving compliance such as environmental auditing. His experience as a consultant includes many environmental impact assessments (EIA's) of proposed urban and other developments, including transportation, waste management, recreational, residential and other projects. Internationally, he has conducted environmental and related socio-economic assessments in Africa, Asia, and South/Central America, for clients such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). He has led projects to develop environmental regulations, e.g., a hazardous waste recycling Code for the Government of Mexico, hazardous waste management regulations for federal facilities in Canada under CEPA, and development of an Environmentally Sound Management Framework for the Export/Import of Hazardous Wastes under CEPA. Bruce has developed training programs and delivered workshops in environmental management and assessment to many audiences, including CN Railway Co. operations across Canada, and to many Aboriginal groups and communities. He has developed national training programs in Environmental Assessment, Waste Management, Environmental Monitoring, and Water Resources Management for Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), and has delivered these to First Nations across Canada. Bruce has a B.Sc. in Life Sciences (University of Toronto), M.Sc. in Biology (University of Waterloo), and Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. |
