/ |; j8 m7 u5 V! b* w% zA Quebec priest who is extradited to the US to face sexual assault charges against altar boys made his first court appearance yesterday before a judge in Massachusetts. The lawyer for father Paul Desele submitted two not guilty pleas on more than thirty charges. The priest is 81 years old and in poor health. He’s been fighting extradition for three years, but recently dropped his appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. As Lour Macclain reports, American officials hope his recent return to the US will bring closure for the 18 victims he is accused of molesting while they were youngster. Father Paul Desile was the arraigned by videoconference in a blue priest jump sat suit from a Woston Massachusetts correction facility. He looked frail and disoriented, and sat silently while Desile Kelly enters not guilty pleas on his behalf. Only two of the former altar boys were in the Court to watch the presidents but would not comment afterwards. They have accused Desile of fondling and abusing them. Paul served as the priests of Our Lady Resumption parish in Bellingham between 1974-1984. Bellingham detective Sergeant Richard Perry was on the case when the victims who are now in their thirties first started coming forward.
' t: k3 x$ G: e: D$ E5 e- qThey just want closure. I think they are kind of a little emotional now because he is finally here, and this a significant step for this case. Massachusetts’s statute of limitation in such crimes is usually six years, but it does not apply to Desile because he moved to Canada shortly after the alleged sexual assaults. Name district attorney John Contae says he is glad the priest finally decided to stop fighting extradition. My take on the matter is that he knew that we had a good case procedurally and just said Hey, let’s face the music. Desile will be back in court again next month. Contae says the court will try working out a plea bargain but he insists he will seek jail time for the 81 years old priest just the same.

But first, one of Canada’s most closely watched political offers remains open but still un-answered this morning. Jack Layton is hoping to hear from Prime Minister Paul Martin today. Martin and the NDP leader are trying to reach a deal to support the Liberal minority government in return for concessions on the budget and spending on social programs. As Tom Perry reports, Layton is demanding Martin roll back corporate tax cut included in the latest federal budget. “We’ve made some very concrete and specific proposals.” Jack Layton is offering Paul Martin a deal. His 19 New Democrat MPs will support the Liberal budget if the liberals back away from more than four and half billion dollars in corporate tax cuts. Reports yesterday suggested Martin was ready to strike a bargain but Layton says he is heared official. (These are various trial balloons that have been floated since we first presented our ideas to Prime Minister and I think I am not gonna respond to the trial balloons). Paul Martin hasn’t said no to Layton thought he has said he regards tax cuts for small and medium sized businesses as important for job creation. And while Layton wants an answer today, Martin told CBC radios as it happens he won’t be bound by the NDP’s time table. (Well look at it, I am not…. in the basis of anybody’s deadlines, what we wanted is the … the government to complete this agenda). Martin says talks between the liberals and NDP are on going and he will wait to see how they turn out. Even if there is agreement between the two parties that may not be enough to keep the liberal minority from collapsing. With 19 MPs NDP doesn’t have enough seats to guarantee the Liberal with survive the confidence house but Layton’s party is still Martin’s best and perhaps only hope to save his battered government. Tom Perry, CBC news, Toronto.
