You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
' n& ]* Z% I3 u- A/ F
9 s# U4 S7 @2 ^  d! }0 r' x  \! _I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
8 s4 ]$ h# _9 a* w5 E$ f1 Q* H9 s- P; U1 y6 C6 \. w
His name was Kyle.
* k! G3 W7 L( n# [2 K0 z' i$ @9 h* o
It looked like he was carrying all of his
: ~3 k0 g) K& I! o5 RBooks.
: o. m5 V2 x5 U$ x2 S! \: z1 e  m% L* J1 |$ w
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?5 h$ b/ P( f" D4 k' N: d6 ]
7 x" W5 W' w4 G9 m3 \. Y, z
He must really be a nerd."
6 K+ f0 d+ C  ?+ A+ e' ^" E
* ?" L; {" T7 R. h8 b+ B( d: `% @9 r/ pI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.5 v4 _. X+ y# i1 c

; p- {; y& a, V$ \- M( `As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him." o8 \# b% V8 I7 `

& O  Y' u( T; \  s  YThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.& r' L! _0 j. Z" }+ [/ z

  k" d: s/ ]% p% v" |His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
, e# ?- w/ U, a! d1 f/ d* ~7 T- d
& W  a/ {0 s* b# }- }  lHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
: K7 |: M! a) w# W& ]- F& @# e! l# ~. h5 d: [- b. L9 w' a
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.  o- J9 q, a8 Q( E
2 t) U3 C- L0 c) O6 v4 e/ A
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
# z" P) C; D  ^$ s( M! ~6 h% z3 d0 M/ [" w0 S" G1 n' U% h
They really should get lives.( I, h7 M+ }( Y$ v9 _; z( a
! A! g' o: V1 f# W% q1 ]  g
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
8 Z6 W5 ^4 w7 a' p; A- X
  c0 ?) F7 ], d  D) B  [There was a big smile on his face.2 x- R7 i/ A1 ]$ f& F& ~) T, |
% ~( k5 `" e9 O  a; G
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
& R& e3 `( z6 J! g; z/ @' b
$ q7 K# J. D; [3 ]; M1 @" }I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
* y8 h& x4 Q# B# z  t& _' h# x5 [3 p! Q: c
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.* ~1 c' q( w( r2 |- W6 l) p$ b0 j

6 v- F% n  j8 j6 w/ d. |  ~He said he had gone to private school before now.# R  W1 C+ v2 F, v0 B) B3 w
8 T8 Y' B5 L+ ^' I
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.5 B/ {$ m; X( C& [3 P  v3 N0 T
' I* X2 o( S4 |# p6 q
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.! B( M) V9 \) }

9 W7 Q" W  U$ r) dHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.. L# ?8 b" V9 |# ]  g3 ~/ u

' U; t5 p& v3 ~+ o# k2 z/ lI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
% @9 ?% k7 Y2 T+ s3 I8 u7 U7 _5 z9 u) Z7 l* H
He said yes.
/ `5 U4 N5 F" x- r% H8 V! {
5 U& f& g1 Z! a2 T9 Y' B7 HWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
" m! `" `2 k, M. y0 ^
6 d. w) z3 i( k$ o2 n* JMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again." _0 o4 R, i) T! C1 m& b
' d, }  _" b( V) s$ t  R! i
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!; [+ `/ g( i" E8 D

, D; C" V+ k3 c5 s3 q# F( ]" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
4 X% }3 K% K2 ]2 X" d. g  @  ?, J7 U' ^9 u: v
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.* S6 a8 w% G. I1 P/ ]1 g3 L

- ?  D8 z5 L' ^$ g3 e& kWhen we were seniors, we began to think
1 D6 o: z- a0 n: A5 G2 ~0 qAbout college.. F2 W4 B8 A, r# s
  w0 l/ g- [' P3 x  g
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
8 S3 u+ e: S1 n% K. M* X" a1 L$ fWas going to Duke.. ]8 j1 v7 J- {, ?9 q. ]/ C

' S, J1 z; W6 `0 {3 B' K" @' @I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.* @7 C; B  `9 o% C
6 h* h, A; \& G1 c
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.* k% ?+ l4 Z% X! k/ Z. h$ c
# W. ^7 i) d6 j; r% [( K0 X
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.& {: ~) E, D; }$ m' c* f

& R! O4 C* g1 k% WI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
0 v2 \6 Z$ {) _7 R  W, K: o+ I4 c2 ]; I4 I- y! N& [3 ~
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
3 ^6 p5 J% `+ Z; e7 w+ O  c* l( Q9 O( b1 H
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak

+ q7 x( _, C) s- U, [& MGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
; |& X$ n  f7 D8 j) `* n& F' x) j0 }$ H$ s6 r1 Y. ~& }$ }$ X4 M! @) O
He looked great.
8 ]* O2 _& `4 p+ Z! ~6 M
: P4 A8 V4 H8 ?+ i0 i0 LHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.7 H: K- v/ ^  H; n) h3 r! f( w
0 }  ~# c) B; V2 [: g4 ]( @& A' V
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses." u9 H1 Y  t( Q8 ?0 d& Z

/ P) B# X1 y2 {He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.5 ?8 Z- v. P8 }8 _6 P
/ Y$ A7 A, p: D3 x
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
- y: T; N, m6 w& D, H/ [6 h) J+ O! r& a
Today was one of those days.
: g) ]. i, l; c0 O5 I# M% c* r! U+ b( I4 D& a% N, F
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
! O, e2 B3 k! q8 L! a% N: J5 h; ^# u7 B
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
; _& u6 N6 Y% ?; G* T  Z/ a: }5 u; W4 x0 A+ ~7 w
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.- M4 }) s7 z- f* e

* m  g6 P$ l7 O5 @4 r. b"Thanks," he said.; \2 {- a! R! q# @
- B$ ^" ]( x# J6 V) N- l
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began* R: ]  j, D7 B- {2 y

; D/ v; e  n2 [0 t: f4 x7 K"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
1 a& D& N3 {" Q; G% e0 c
; y$ R0 r. Q9 K% bYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...# G3 V9 I3 {2 h- }* k6 y, i
' w7 h1 c  ?4 L9 D
I am here to tell all of you that being a
% T: d, s3 u: u* w- n4 h2 _7 UFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.4 S' P3 f# j5 t: J4 L

( G9 F2 `9 K* J" Q# ^9 U  q, TI am going to tell you a story."' w* C1 S1 U- j3 ^! Y" `- l/ R
! H1 [0 }! w! y3 P; M
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.; ~. w! r; p; z% V

: _3 U7 T  x/ m; F; `# ]1 d% uHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
7 |2 R+ b/ j+ @8 [; a7 W8 a, ^' S
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.3 r% p' x4 u! _7 L9 t% t

6 a: c7 W" `9 i% N7 sHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.- Q/ s( }9 x4 {* L
) [) n& s6 G8 y, ~
"Thankfully, I was saved.% v& _# h. w& \) l

; O  r+ s1 Z# k" S% i( d# ~; wMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
7 E7 r* t1 L+ E7 |/ I; v- M6 f$ ~
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
# _. t2 A, s  m' H, B/ L3 z. [5 @
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
3 h! ?/ u8 c& m+ ?3 {! V/ z9 j
' m7 V" K0 c& e2 ~! J& B) z3 oNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.6 W5 q$ M! h% W) S* Y3 x: T

% o& d; o( k; ]1 }9 [3 wNever underestimate the power of your actions.
# R% a8 }2 q3 r% B
( |0 X& H7 J$ TWith one small gesture you can change a person's life., `' {" M" `6 t. m0 T$ p9 J
. J5 p2 c" C5 B! M+ e9 h6 c9 n
For better or for worse.$ z& x7 p. w. b2 i/ c$ O3 @

, h( y4 x8 ?* M* bGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way./ Z6 D' H5 A( A5 S& N' a

% Y5 k4 d* B5 a
" S+ A' @" c9 ^+ e# H( aYou now have two choices, you can:
& B4 l& U6 b/ L
, m2 j* t% u1 \  F1) Pass this on to your friends or
3 I6 }: H2 H/ g( X$ ]8 t. P
& B& v! B3 _! e2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

. }- p" |9 a1 lAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
- K* S3 |! T* a4 O& p"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

" ]) v5 _8 `9 i1 KThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
: J/ Z" V/ `3 n( J6 r- j9 W3 V0 z* N" Q. [: Y; m7 a: K
Tomorrow is mystery.
