Follow Your Dream

& L( N' O  R* j& F( b+ `- P5 rI have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro.
" S# j4 V7 g9 `3 I' e# P, \He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money 3 }( O- ^$ h% r/ n
for youth at risk programs. ( h2 L! O5 L8 r1 ]3 _

/ ~3 X1 W/ m9 R6 H* AThe last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you 7 ?0 _' \7 g5 U! b8 F% N% W
why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young - T, ?! b" R6 o# m$ ~
man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable . h( A# p7 H8 ^# v1 }# Z
to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training
4 ^3 \) w9 o0 y" \+ D5 ~horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted. / Q( y( e9 J9 [* {4 j
When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted . z$ k: B; O3 O+ f+ Y+ p/ J* L
to be and do when he grew up.
' [0 `' H7 Z* ]% p: X9 Y+ H! f& a- C  {. {6 C3 n3 P8 X& |
'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday
( k6 ^! m& K# ]+ h  A$ g6 k8 B( {% X6 Sowning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even
+ K( i* i! d6 J7 m" j, I- R5 ndrew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, 3 j7 {+ H# x$ `
the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot
. f4 r7 N$ O! chouse that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.
$ x3 l. h! W: V- e
0 e; x& d  c' Q! u2 K9 H'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he
5 m5 S- i+ B% ^3 G. W: U7 ~handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.
7 k4 }# k4 `8 ?1 Q$ D5 rOn the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after
6 T! Z+ H; |8 S' m! F* L  iclass.' / I. k  t) V2 [/ m

" T# H( c: v, T'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, 6 t* E& ~9 V' d7 K& N  ~
`Why did I receive an F?'
: _% [1 W. E3 f2 @, Q* C, u3 J- d: `3 i; p" d
'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.
2 K9 H( G9 r: ]. [You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources.
1 \, o" U  i* h: N/ tOwning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land.
# p2 b% W8 c6 D5 \+ I4 U+ pYou have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to
6 ?2 S: q0 R% z; G5 i3 mpay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher 2 w5 r  ]; k- b, k/ N
added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will
+ t! l. u# E6 p0 s! K& [9 wreconsider your grade.’
" [* ^9 a* e6 ?: m9 T! L
1 Y5 a3 W7 E/ h  O  R" B0 O  ?'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father # u7 [; g; p& D" A
what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your
! B0 F: |: m* a! V  N4 Sown mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for
* M& `2 k. C8 D* @you.’ 2 [$ y( M9 I3 m+ a

1 l1 q& a3 p4 r1 {; Z'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same
! g1 `) U" p4 @. v% k" S9 {* dpaper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll
* b+ v- h. W! w' \. k7 I9 n" `0 Tkeep my dream.''
5 e* k! I% N1 U. U* b
6 E- D! p: F4 r1 R# TMonty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story
. E# k+ c1 f  S/ J5 J$ z8 nbecause you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of
3 |7 r! W4 y# `1 J! @5 I% T( F$ Jmy 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the - T% w; ^) F2 k5 v# k
fireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago $ G) n- m  h8 h1 Y1 C4 H
that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.'
. t$ _! q+ S. N( U4 Q( M3 v+ mWhen the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this ' j- |) W4 H) z& A! u9 s
now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During 3 A) O2 c+ U! ~# `" R2 K
those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption
. K9 Z: Z7 G  e' u8 ?% enot to give up on yours.’'
* j2 F) m; t; f4 b7 f' o# Y4 @5 |; w, I2 D! P- b' J
Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
