CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract; ^  X# W$ D) x" f

JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  * M/ W% [: K+ L. g
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  1 x8 k" O& L; p6 D
2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  ' X9 v$ b4 J9 q/ i5 c! b
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
2 _" t  m% a. D5 k0 o2 J' p! oStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  / d8 P, s* }0 }8 a
year following their appointment.2 S' q6 X- d) D+ L, Q
+ P9 b& B' Q+ a/ j8 k. S3 }3 q$ o
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:9 T3 v( E$ z* k) E

1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000) }4 C4 X* t  _6 S5 z! K& ?) _3 Z
1 v4 I9 Q( q& |
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.
# a* R8 O/ m& f: r' y/ d6 Y7 Y( W9 r7 o8 _& F, a7 a3 ~5 {1 @
3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.

4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
% m% V: b- [  X) zadequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
/ s  w5 @( D6 }9 z: Z& ~1 J. M5 U. @across campus, and advertising the poll locations.$ |( h3 y7 ^2 h
( J8 N3 M  |5 l- m
5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
4 n+ _/ r( G( V. Q8 _) g% ireferenda.

1 D9 n+ B8 ~0 W% I/ G6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  3 _- V. d6 X. ?5 M# B# l
parties.

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
9 d# B$ Y  Z: e$ Greferendum.

5 Q, f/ U2 I9 B& I# ^  d1 U To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections    i( J# p$ B8 }& J
Bylaw 2000.& v5 ~* b+ C% n( h& J  F" f$ i1 @0 [+ h

4 R( `- x) x  T! _3 V10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  
1 [. q8 P+ R. o( H- Sminimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
5 }  |* Z( a* N8 Z5 ufrom the first working day after nominations close until the last day  
' \0 K& S: y  ~* }of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.7 |# D, Y; U( e8 C' x
1 H- T2 j5 \. i* H+ H  s- B
11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
8 c& s! c+ d/ }" Cthe course of an election/referendum.) I  e% D: s* N

6 I1 G6 _, d% b4 d8 y% V) n12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  ' |! _3 s4 V' m, B
process is in place.. Y4 A& g( r8 ^, R: y( A$ `. C

13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  
  U: E6 a- j0 vof activities and recommendations.

14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
3 ^' b# C6 E( B; nof campaigning.; o3 i6 ~7 x1 I2 R( L, Y

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council

QUALIFICATIONS:
- m* }% Q( _! o" m
6 d* Z8 ^& G7 n9 w* Z6 @1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
  a2 l, [9 Q3 Yfor each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  ( R7 k0 b0 T# R
Union member.
9 @% `  D9 G2 L$ z' D+ j1 Z+ x$ G. B! L
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
- d3 [3 f) T0 T: ~+ y- I/ }8 l
% {/ C, o6 d! s5 c3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
: G* G9 z( R& D$ ^0 _/ Y9 |any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  0 n- [2 a+ ^9 z8 o6 {
with the Students' Union.

5) Excellent project management skills are required.) Z! j  S5 {  Y" l
