Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ' ? e7 W* `3 F0 U. Y6 z

Dear International Undergraduate Students,6 b/ {& C& @8 ^3 e
$ U. ~' r8 r% IYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 5 r+ ]% O( j. N+ I% Q
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ; y& ~* [7 w! Z7 L8 z
news to report from that meeting.
, y* P, o# ~) `* _9 R
* u1 \/ L) t7 U, }7 p ^# MFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
) s% _" _2 U2 |8 {undergraduate international students from the increase to the
$ d0 Q+ v; i% V0 p9 K ^$ U; Vdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international * Y* w6 r1 ?; t5 g( l
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ! L3 f. w& J# E d( x
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
; ~* K/ d- j. P/ { A i$ R& @Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
/ ]5 J+ o1 t8 Y% {- b% C( xthe differential for international graduate students.
% I8 c+ p7 t$ U. k% p2 G* k
( M6 M: C. d" f8 |& C) zNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
* E3 @' h; a# ]2 B' z& Zincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
7 }3 V4 O3 S0 c6 b& U0 V220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
" f9 L/ S* \" Z5 bwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
4 r" [3 \, {, g" i/ Z8 [least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ) x/ R( m; T( N/ a+ v2 R
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
$ I7 ~1 t6 ~; F6 G/ f3 N- wincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
, r$ a2 C0 L& _7 z; x5 finternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
, o) {" W$ K3 C0 O! l% ywould like to say thank you to all of the international students that * _2 \4 t# A- h6 }; ]
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 9 Y3 |2 r( w3 _
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
; c3 P6 k% U( i( e) L( v! e- ehelp. Thank you.
