Researchers in Britain have found that people who speak Mandarin Chinese use both sides of their brain to understand the language. 9 u; E3 P. c7 @/ S0 v9 m% n: T; a

The researchers said the findings could boost understanding of how the brain processes languages. $ z  O, B% \2 ^$ }

This, in turn, could one day help scientists to develop better ways of helping people to re-learn languages after a stroke or similar damage to the brain. 3 Y) l& P+ v) Q. O' q' \3 {2 p& o

They found that the left temporal lobe, which is located by the left temple, becomes active when English speakers hear English.
+ B! h. u7 O: A$ ~0 x) A

The researchers believe that this area of the brain links speech sounds together to form individual words. 5 G% R! G% x# k) _

They expected similar findings when they carried out scans on Mandarin speakers.

However, they found that both their left and right temporal lobes become active when they hear Mandarin. . B% Z- |/ \- f# F5 _; {2 G

8 i0 i% P. {& ?  ^6 CMandarin is a notoriously difficult language to learn. Unlike English, speakers use intonation to distinguish between completely different meanings of particular words. $ h& i# S" j2 F) Z. M) p+ R5 `  F# p

For instance, the word "ma" can mean mother, scold, horse or hemp depending on how it is said.
+ p' ^4 l  r4 q. N% M5 _
% x1 ~$ c' J' LThe researchers believe that this need to interpret intonation is why Mandarin speakers need to use both sides of their brain.

The right temporal lobe is normally associated with being able to process music or tones. 2 C$ g3 X3 _6 B$ Y* v' l% ?

"We think that Mandarin speakers interpret intonation and melody in the right temporal lobe to give the correct meaning to the spoken words," said Dr Scott.

8 v0 O8 p  f( w+ k"It seems that the structure of the language you learn as a child affects how the structure of your brain develops to decode speech. " H6 D: ]) B" l4 ?. ~. q& W7 Q

Dr Scott said the findings could help scientists to understand how the brain learns language. * s+ f: s( E2 g3 U9 l' ~3 B

It could be particularly useful in trying to understand how it re-learns language after a stroke. ) y* D; I) L/ v9 j$ \9 q; d

"There is evidence from other studies that certain drugs affect learning in the brain regions that support hearing and speech," she said. 5 @1 D" t) r1 J  s% a

Dr William Marslen-Wilson, of the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at Cambridge University, welcomed the study.
