Language watchdogs today gave departing United States President George Bush and former prime minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher lifetime achievement awards for their contributions to English.
7 ^. Y9 G6 |0 n, TThe Plain English Campaign (PEC) gave Mr Bush the "Foot In Mouth Award" to mark the departure of "a rich source of gaffes" from the political scene and gave Baroness Thatcher a "Contribution To Plain English Award" in recognition of her "straight talking" style.$ d4 f3 m. e) x

Campaign spokesman said Mr Bush was an "arch mangler" of the English language and campaign officials listed a selection of his reported sayings.

A campaign spokeswoman said the PEC felt that Baroness Thatcher had been the prime example of a straight-talking politician.8 |6 N3 y/ l; ]8 @8 B: V

"We admire her for her plain speaking – that has nothing to do with her political colour," said the spokeswoman.
