Roles and Functions
8 c) v8 K3 `! nThe Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the& [9 `" c2 |" R0 U) }
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
8 G; M |- o* Xoperations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has
( G1 f" T+ b6 zthe important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress, F4 d# ~% R8 E! g0 [7 W/ u
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular6 n3 ]3 D2 f5 ~% l- `
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is# p( \0 C9 C$ I& f
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
' `. w! D' W1 uemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires
% ?0 s0 J6 J) h1 { _4 o3 ?7 p! |staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend7 D- G# O/ O# I0 Y
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:/ A; _) R2 K, O
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the
8 i/ Q: a' o2 Y3 Xofficers of the Coalition' a0 T5 ]' {6 M9 x0 D6 z
2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
# [* t! i8 b, y' c# oorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations) n5 l1 P; B7 }5 o- V
and public institutions$ x! A3 o }- k1 ?9 o! B0 T
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
8 r! w- {, G( L: [& Bfunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives
# M, Q% Y& h8 O2 h+ q9 z" \ q4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community
& f. a* W* @! [% Sorganizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with; W0 } t2 P8 v" `" S+ \- I9 H

9 z7 {2 L4 ]# nAdministrative responsibilities:. y! [& ^& M4 Z5 [6 w4 e: F; N: P
1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its a4 a2 F; K/ V/ G. v
regular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of" z# W; t( z4 R) \: _
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
% z" D9 }" {& f( lmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition.
: \- j# w) Z& A# a* w2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the* G$ _% [( x5 E- {; B. l
Multicultural Coalition
' ~* G! S- b1 d4 x- FRelationship of the Coordinator to the Board, \2 D6 \2 a' q) r* I
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
: S' |5 O4 S# a3 s* l x# Z* qimplement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating8 y6 |" J' R! m$ Q v
operations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
- A5 ?, F3 C9 q% LThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
: j, ` M8 G4 D4 f& F5 waims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should' m& A1 p) Z6 R0 i& d/ Z6 K. [) ^
be noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership
& B, w" M0 O4 B- oparticipation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and
, ^* m2 A, L9 ]( Q' [- U0 Hfacilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of$ D8 S0 {, K' I* B
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial$ r" y! R9 n5 A+ d6 \: r1 g5 q# E
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all, k- r1 \9 ?- G: M/ `
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of' E( o+ ]1 B) \6 s6 }4 t l
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of
