They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

. F$ T8 d- `1 [! V- E, iDiagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
Operating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
! R2 S/ j4 v0 T: o9 MAssembling and starting engines
Diagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
Performing other functions as assigned


Good eye-hand coordination
Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
8 S; d% j4 [6 L2 a$ o& _# |. WOccasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds
Physical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
5 O; f/ Z5 x. o2 PWorking shifts, sometimes away from home
Basic technical knowledge of diesel
Welding skills
2 J/ m, O& C! h! d- \% k% ^Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
/ p! X  I6 u6 T5 _; r7 \, C5 vMay need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
