• A well-written resumé is an essential component of your job search. It serves as a marketing tool to make a positive first impression and for you to secure an interview.% F+ [/ J5 g1 c8 N6 a' n
! `$ `( v' K5 }! \3 e• The average resumé is given 10 to 30 seconds to make an impression on the reader.

• Resumés should be:9 _3 U" w) G% R
o Short and easy to read ( 2-3 pages max)& Z* ]9 h2 s, y; [% P0 f9 m+ f
o Interesting to look at (not too crowded with information; have standard sized margins, not too large/small font, white spaces are allowed and actually increase readability)
) m# G1 C7 q Eo Is focused to match your career goal/job you are applying for, y6 `9 k9 D A3 g3 D1 D
+ H p' X* J+ Q7 f• A resumé is a reflection of the individual who it belongs to, and there are many different ways to capture the information required. You are the expert on you; tailor your resumé to reflect your experience(s).9 l% I) Z" z$ Z% \+ }$ F
: d+ _& E$ p- [' g" W. L- I• Resumés are organized into separate components. These components can be named by using different headings. All of these components should be in a resumé, if they are relevant to you.
X7 f$ i8 ]& S4 ]$ l d9 Y j0 U# |o Personal information: Name, address, postal code, telephone numbers, email. If you are posting your resume on-line you may wish to remove your street address to protect your privacy.
% v6 d$ e! C" {4 f1 No Objective: This component is optional. The objective is a short one or two line description of your career objective. It should focus on the type of position you are applying for.- T/ s0 Z; @# o- k! W
o Highlights of Qualifications: This component is a short paragraph or bulleted list that catches the reader’s attention by highlighting your background and career accomplishments as they relate to the position you are applying for. This section is optional.* s, Z. u- |) @0 T4 n( v
o Skills and Experiences: This component describes your skill sets or areas of expertise. Things that could be included in this section are: Communication Skills, People Skills, Computer Skills, Management Skills and Research Skills. Under each heading, include about 4 to 8 bullets listing your accomplishments to show your skills and areas of expertise.
0 N2 n, A% c0 Q, Y) l" {8 go Education: List your formal education most recent to least recent. If you have a degree, diploma or post secondary certificate it is not necessary to list your high school diploma, it is inferred. Include training that has been completed as well as training that is currently in progress
( Q7 ^7 T, @ f. U% Po Employment History: List your title, company you worked for and the dates - dates should be on the right side of the page; they do not need to include months. If you are using a chronological format, list your accomplishments, responsibilities and duties in this area.: a, A3 V" u1 n( A
o Volunteer Activities/Community Involvement/Memberships/Professional Associations: These components are optional.

It is assumed that everyone has references and that they will be provided when asked. The reference information should be typed neatly on a separate sheet and given to the employer which is usually requested at the end of the interview.' B4 i" {- d; I

• After the Personal, Objective and Highlights of Qualifications headings, place your remaining headings in the order of importance for the position you are applying for. " q. p L2 c+ N. m

o Use the same tense throughout the entire resumé. When you’ve done something once, your experience is in the past, even if you will do it again tomorrow. Use the past tense to keep things consistent9 v2 [6 ~4 N/ M9 v, }0 `8 D
