EDMONTON - Two drivers were killed when their vehicles collided head-on east of Red Deer, Blackfalds RCMP said Friday.

Around 4:40 p.m. Thursday, a 1999 Buick Century was westbound on Highway 595, about 13 km east of Red Deer, when it veered into the eastbound lane, narrowly missing one vehicle that swerved out of the way. The Buick then collided with a 2005 Volvo XC70.

; _1 b% e2 v! \. Y% y; z4 {7 GBystanders rendered first aid, but the 49-year-old woman driving the Volvo and the 29-year-old man behind the wheel of the Buick both died on scene. A 22-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Buick was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital and then flown to the Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital with life-threatening injuries. : p+ ?3 B% b0 ?) |0 }3 _3 E o K% M

RCMP continue to investigate, and say it’s unclear if alcohol or distracted driving were contributing factors in the collision. Speed did not appear to have been a factor.& a9 F' ~" X+ P$ W; E- U# }; m
