Follow Your Dream

$ W0 I6 y( C: I0 T$ qI have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. " M. x# y1 N- e! f3 I
He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money
$ K3 J+ \, N1 U4 i1 w5 Ifor youth at risk programs.
& O& @) n( L/ L. G( H: Z3 v, g! s+ M5 y( h8 g1 D# H3 _7 v% {
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you
2 Q6 v# Y' Z/ dwhy I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young $ B! E6 ]  |2 n% x+ k$ b
man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable / J" U5 Y, m1 T" g
to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training 6 m! ^; H! G+ z# N
horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted.
* W) V% O0 [/ @8 B. X" H9 t; PWhen he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted / ?- p4 {9 p- |- C0 t
to be and do when he grew up.
0 ]2 Z7 b! |+ z7 v1 w
" i! ]0 @0 |: ~# j'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday 2 `- f& h6 n9 `: n- G: Q- O, |
owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even
7 C# o- U4 K7 M% z) A2 Udrew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, 2 v! _7 E6 Q+ U' X; t$ r: i, K
the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot 4 L% l& ]0 j+ j
house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.
: w: L& X1 }# I' B( b3 T) p; t+ Z: Y& n: {$ w1 V5 `9 D- Y1 m0 p! j$ \
'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he 3 e6 ~* s  P1 b: y! K
handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.
/ R3 z* o. X' O. q1 R$ {* W$ |On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after
+ W4 |/ {- v) w  d6 I1 H9 R5 vclass.' $ q' e  ]) s) L% |

( h! h7 s# R  G) {) k  z" m'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, / O( s: |- F# a& Y% s+ t
`Why did I receive an F?'
. i/ L% u1 |7 C  ~8 Z8 L0 d3 l: o, Z/ z. o; g+ H& \$ d! H
'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.
" i- H# \/ g3 U+ T% z$ @  k" xYou have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources.   W! V9 A+ T6 |2 L- W' h
Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. - a* m* h0 v: t% d- P
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to ! T* L$ ~5 w% R9 ?
pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher 3 N! L% M) u4 {& {5 @/ ~& b
added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will 3 r) v; h/ z6 u- s; j# z
reconsider your grade.’
$ R/ {, L  ?4 F' G3 e6 G9 {; y1 f, ~6 d: N) r3 s
'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father 3 W% K. A- i8 n: e1 x
what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your
5 T9 x) n; J+ Y! uown mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for
0 O; U! [& G& }6 |& q+ s9 I1 oyou.’ ) c( ?( ]. ~) n1 B4 d$ f

7 D: S$ i0 G. I' D( Z! Q'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same
0 l8 P* d& Y( e" ~4 Mpaper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll 4 O) s9 o- D' k& p
keep my dream.''
0 j+ e" o. P& p' F: [! }
: }. |& R" v% x3 Z/ d5 AMonty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story 5 B4 K+ f' T' |5 }
because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of
& H3 c/ E/ ^& L1 z2 P) `0 Tmy 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the
' B* X2 l5 C) J9 tfireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago
# }3 J+ d  P4 G. [1 W7 Jthat same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.'
0 x# ^, |# ~) K# qWhen the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this
4 J9 o  |0 U( g9 o* W  A3 Vnow. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During 4 e" L" Q- r2 R$ g( _+ o9 J" w
those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption 0 x! @' f0 _& B' [3 s/ _1 P
not to give up on yours.’'

" `+ o0 k4 b9 o1 I1 d, ?7 ^Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
