Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

% a4 P3 Z3 K( {8 d pYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 4 P3 K+ @6 @9 D& o' D
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
& V% y e& T3 |+ X! Q+ j) gnews to report from that meeting.0 q$ v) i3 b% b( n/ B: ]
9 Z( r6 y2 k# h& r2 p9 \) K1 HFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ) w& x4 Y; N" L' o
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
9 h& @3 [/ y/ `% w" ^8 X' ldifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 2 B8 _9 M- r, g
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
3 x2 X5 t, x4 E) U" K8 dtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
( r' G" u* r" F$ C$ G7 J! bAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase " x" N1 y( ^* @: M
the differential for international graduate students.$ [/ d7 A7 O7 O) f7 B2 e
# k) ]' u4 z: N: @" A1 \
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
7 M2 b: G/ E: A, Fincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
# C; l" e5 w- Z( J220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 3 w# H$ A- Q- Z' O0 S7 L [# U
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 2 s3 M# i6 p9 }
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ! T+ y8 \ r( Y, F9 g/ g* R. Y
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected & D* e1 J$ X* a( O6 D d( K; [: p
increases once they are here.

7 r1 a# @$ ?' E- RThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
. X' R. {6 l2 Y% q& n, K! \international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
6 a0 t! v/ Y& F. }4 I; kwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
+ \. O6 G% i7 t( [- Dhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ' u& }% `& ^# K. v; u' j# M
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 6 n. O' {9 z1 D1 p) y6 B* Y
