Why wear a poppy

  A9 p( h- w- V2 k! x+ m And held one forth, but I shook my head , p, Z+ X$ f) _
Then I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare & G9 c- g7 |( L0 @
Her face was old, and lined with care,
2 ]$ x. u% |: |% x$ vYet beneath the scars, the years had made 3 @5 m, H; D$ l5 f4 G5 J( q
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
. U2 r+ W7 y- `' B) y- I3 q; |. x! d3 [$ m% m
A boy came whistling down the street . V' ]# a5 `; `! \' h0 _* }
Bounding along on his carefree feet 4 G* y/ M+ \7 V' A
His smile was full of joy and fun
, {1 N0 e9 `7 Q" {* B& E' x3 K “Lady” he said, “can I have one?
* P) ~. D4 a4 ]5 FAs she pinned it on I heard him say 3 n1 w* h* W9 p. [2 r% p3 J
“Why do we wear the poppy today?”
  t$ S4 G9 F3 B6 e! |0 |2 Z' uThe lady smiled in her wistful way
, h/ j& i9 q( [And answered “this is remembrance day” 3 R; h4 u/ U+ W' k0 S* g5 `: l
7 ]: Y# b& z; G0 F: p. Y6 h- }
“The poppy is the symbol for the,
1 Y5 s9 I( e2 qThe gallant men and women who died in the war”.
# B$ h6 }5 p7 ? “And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see” % n2 W) r/ |8 g2 z2 h: X$ Q6 g

/ k- y: j+ l! x& R6 h/ o0 w! |“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes,
" I7 S: C' R: a- }# k9 A/ _& A  RHe loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about”
0 j- Q7 L# Q$ f4 m8 }/ F3 J! HAs the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”,
5 s- H/ W9 |+ ]. T$ MHe was fine and strong with a boyish smile,
. j* P8 w& w) e7 S4 eBut he seemed to be with us a such a short while
3 }1 s2 y/ }6 O. NWhen the War broke out he went away
7 s- Z: G, C2 u/ I: CI can still remember his face that day $ p8 w4 T0 e' }
When he smiled at me and said goodbye
4 V7 _+ w: {& @8 i) V# S“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry” # Y8 D8 a) Y  S3 i0 ?3 @% X
# c) ^7 `$ E2 G: d
But the War went on and he had to stay
+ S7 w( F$ S. w7 mAll I could do was wait and pray
& [6 j3 N0 W; d) ^His letters told of an awful fight % B# ^, f% @# n
I can see it still in my dreams at night " M9 F* l" ~, i% F
With the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire 8 G( a- L. m' T' z
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire 9 B4 Q' K) {- g! Y- u3 I4 j
Until at last the War was won
5 i- i2 ]: r5 Y, |7 e7 C2 L/ rAnd that is why we wear the poppy son
: n3 h+ p( J. F+ o8 [
1 j" e' i; V$ p# I4 T7 ~- NThe small boy turned as if to go
) `1 Z0 l$ }, v- w! mThen stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know” 6 w9 S7 `4 f2 }8 {" M
That sure did sound like an awful fight/ A9 L/ ^" F  R3 x$ B- T8 U- a- u
“But your son, did he come home all right”? % \2 ^. e0 e3 [
A tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head
/ ^% g5 h2 h3 T3 ]1 XBut didn’t speak.& [1 m0 p4 g$ T

  ^  o6 t2 d- R* n) A, zI slunk away, head bowed in shame,
& _- D+ M+ Z0 Q2 {And if you were me, you’d have done the same,
+ ]: m# M9 `9 ]" n% |For our thanks in giving is often delayed
$ N) _' R! W1 LThough our freedom was bought by the legions who paid.
. X6 E" k9 M+ S+ ~/ f9 m; W/ k; }/ [# j0 ~/ D' `. }7 U4 M. E
And so, when you see a poppy worn
* R9 u: z4 `4 j: W5 BLet us reflect on the burden borne
* C# @' H1 K2 qBy those who gave their precious all
: B+ `7 v  d. X6 z% B0 D2 vWhen asked to answer their countries call . i- [- ]- J2 b. ~: q2 K$ M
That we at home, in peace may live ! F; U3 \( R3 S5 }1 \
Then wear a poppy, remember, and give.
