I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro.
/ h3 z& F1 P/ w0 h" b  B; k0 }0 MHe has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money & H2 [" ]+ n, d" X( V( t: D
for youth at risk programs.
3 _4 f: X* \- g. D6 G" `% f+ _# x! w
+ ]! A" N! l) [The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you ! V  T1 b/ Z1 d
why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young
! m0 P. W: ?! O7 U$ g! H, k4 c: wman who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable . ^3 r* H0 D; ^+ q: H3 j9 ]
to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training # Y% u, ]2 D+ V. x% J: x$ r
horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted.
- x. K- z" T2 b" X0 u; x' G& l) GWhen he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted
3 T! _/ R" D# H7 s5 s3 i3 S% Wto be and do when he grew up. 5 P1 a* k+ D5 L: G  {
& h! ~, x5 p0 t! ?6 O; J* ^
'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday
& u% @+ {3 F% S+ xowning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even
3 W+ \+ Y$ e5 G. e" _drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings,
! U! Z* t" m# ?9 J( E' ^# |: a1 Ethe stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot
4 v2 \" T  d8 j  g7 {house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.
! n" a5 K/ [( l4 h4 q( m; X1 G. t) _7 u' i0 }9 y
'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he 5 R; h4 B& P) M# _2 c& I
handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.
2 _* h9 v8 H. r2 N! c2 P& `On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after + G4 Y6 ]9 j  s* G; \6 D8 V, w
class.'
' z4 ?( E$ p* r& \( I7 Z0 D4 n4 F) y& w8 m2 r
'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked,
: S3 n- U) s% l; \`Why did I receive an F?' 0 U% v# `0 M+ C* \

3 r* [" B7 w' i, A+ X* Q% ~'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.
( T  p1 u0 ?$ u6 t8 Z$ yYou have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources.
5 X6 l0 Z$ \* [6 E0 D& ZOwning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. - b2 X- U. S9 u$ u7 a; ?; b
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to
( \9 |+ _3 a3 T8 V$ i& p1 @pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher
6 y. Y/ U: o+ F5 h  o  Oadded, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will * ^$ l; G2 |$ c& J, H0 B
reconsider your grade.’ % f3 @" i2 N1 _7 @0 r+ u
1 Q- }7 \/ F' t( b% L
'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father
, q; M$ t+ c; M& kwhat he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your
, _. a9 j- I1 n. c7 Q6 J& h& B5 bown mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for
: [. j* Q9 v. dyou.’ , G! H) e2 k# j* S9 m: F' L
: k: w0 S5 ]+ K- ?6 ^
'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same * Z3 F& r; L; I0 B& w
paper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll
, m5 T) |- y$ hkeep my dream.''
4 t& U$ ~$ N" S9 L; S: n8 v" s& `
" m% m& e4 H4 {/ tMonty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story 2 Z) J; x8 Y& s% `  v& O
because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of
) Z; N% Y2 R5 N4 wmy 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the
1 G2 h$ d( W: @' ^% E1 v$ yfireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago - M' j4 g) C5 U: k, {3 H
that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.' & y) o) ^% p9 C7 P# I, w* P& r
When the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this
; Z: J1 t+ ?& ]* W& Hnow. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During
' ~* ]3 @" U" g+ `% C4 [those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption 3 L6 y# W8 o  D0 m
not to give up on yours.’'

! t1 H: z8 l% e3 b6 W$ Z+ NDon't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
